MEET MOLLY:
Molly McConn || 20 years young || Student at The University of Texas || Kappa Kappa Gamma
What's one thing you wish you would have known entering college?
It is hard at first. You constantly hear from people in college or graduates that it’s the best four years of your life. I’m pretty much smack dab in the middle of this wild ride and I’m inclined to agree with them, but nobody seems to mention the adjustment period at first. This leads a lot of people into thinking they’re the only ones that aren’t having “the time of their lives” yet. Rest assured--you’re not the only one and you’re also not the only one who doesn’t want to admit it!
What’s
the best advice you could give or you’ve ever received?
Worrying does nothing for you. With that being said, I still have to remind myself this multiple times a day. On a lighter note, I also love the mantra for a lady to keep your head, heels and standards high.
How
did you deal with homesickness?
Distracting myself! This was simple being surrounded in an all girls’ dorm, having commitments with my sorority and of course, that school thing.
Dorms:
What should all girls have in their closet?
A crisp white and chambray button down oxford one size too big, neutral heels and flats (that are relatively comfortable--the sad truth: nothing that’s super comfortable is that cute), a thick brown leather belt, something dripping in sequins, riding boots in nice leather (splurge on these!), an ample supply of cozy sweaters and loungewear shirts, a really impractical dress that you love seeing in your closet every morning, lenin shorts, a skinny and flare jean, a denim jacket, a loose-fitting blazer, an unconventional color of denim, and a maxi dress and/or skirt
What makes a good college wardrobe?
It really depends on the school/environment. Feel it out or do your research before you start packing. Asking someone that goes there is always a good resource to turn to. Bring your favorite everyday pieces. My stand-bys are gold hoops, pearl studs, a flashy gold earring, my cross necklace, and a watch. Lately, I’ve been dabbling more in bracelets and rings but my collections are still works-in-progress.
What's something we want to bring but shouldn't?
All your extremely fashion-forward accessories--hats, non-everyday sunglasses, lots of bathing suits, colorful blazers, sundresses
Something we cannot have enough of...
Soft loungewear tops from anthropologie, maxi skirts, button-downs, cozy knit sweaters that act as a wearable blanket for trips to the library
What's the best way to wear things multiple ways?
I wear things differently all the time and this is one of my favorite ways to modify my wardrobe without modifying my checking account. I layer differently in the winter. I roll up sleeves all the way, none of the way, or part of the way. I tie my button downs to cinch in my waist. I tuck dresses that are now too short for me into jeans and transform them into tops. I wear belts at the waist and at the hips.
Rush:
Quick tips?
As most things work in life, rush is simply about finding a balance! Don't be afraid to do something that may not necessarily be what all your friends are doing but also do what feels right.
One thing you wished you knew going into it?
IT’S. SO. FUN! Don’t be intimidated by the process.
Rent The Runway or should we use our own clothes?
Use your own. You’ll be wearing the same things once you’re on the other side, so you might as well invest in some timeless pieces. Tell your mom it’s your “going away present!”
Best thing about it looking back?
Having all the fun ahead of me, looking forward to all the things girls kept talking about and knowing I was embarking on such a crazy fun adventure. And bonding with my soon-to-be bestie Mary Elizabeth throughout it all!
Favorite things about being in a sorority:
- Parties on your parents’ tab, the best meal plans on campus, and the immediate positive impression it makes on someone when I say “I’m a Kappa”
- Kappa Kappa Gamma! BE THE BEST, GO KKG!
Big thanks to Molly as she wraps up this series!
